IT is a bizarre situation for Burnley to be in with Jelle Vossen, but if he had not been able to settle – as seems to have been the case – then it is the best solution all round.

He has come in for a bit of stick for this incredible turnaround, but I do feel a bit sorry for him.

He hadn’t made the impression that we all hoped he would after signing in the summer and that must have affected his confidence.

With all strikers if the goals aren’t coming your head goes down.

Add being so far away from home on top of that – albeit having just spent a season with Middlesbrough – then it must have been difficult.

So it is perhaps best for all parties to move on.

I know manager Sean Dyche said that you can’t have too many strikers but, to me, eight is too many.

It was midfield where we needed to bulk up and Joey Barton is a great signing, not just for his ability but also his leadership.

He has his history but it should be exactly that. He should be allowed to get on with his job and bring his wealth of experience to the team.

I think he will be a good fit for the dressing room and will get on with the players very quickly, and when he’s out on the pitch he’ll be like another captain. Harry Potts used to say there should be 11 captains out there and he will pull no punches with any player who isn’t doing his job.

Hopefully that won’t be necessary though after the Clarets began to pick up momentum going into the international break.

Before Saturday’s game I would have been happy with a draw against Steve Cotterill’s Bristol City, but to come away with the three points was fantastic.

The first half-hour belonged to the home team and they could have easily been in front but for our good defending.

Like I said last week, if you don’t take your chances you don’t win games, and the Robins didn’t capitalise on their half-chances in the first half-hour.

We just need the strikers to start scoring now and the manager will no doubt use this break to work on figuring out his best XI and front two partnership.

Finally, well done Tom Heaton on another England call-up, and I hope this time he gets the jersey.

It would certainly be a tall order in these qualifiers, with Joe Hart in the ranks, but it’s great that he has been retained in the squad.

He’s international standard and he’s a nice person as well.
