BURNLEY goalkeeper Tom Heaton insists he is not getting carried away and starting to dream of following fellow Championship graduates like John Ruddy into the England squad one day.

Ruddy was capped by his country after impressing for Norwich City following promotion to the top flight, and Heaton is currently one of only five English goalkeepers to be first choice at a Premier League club.

Joe Hart, Fraser Forster and Ben Foster currently occupy the three spots in Roy Hodgson’s squad but Ruddy is now back in the Championship and Heaton has more clean sheets this season than QPR’s Rob Green, who has played for England only once since his error against the USA at the 2010 World Cup.

Heaton’s form has been highly impressive since joining the Clarets in the summer of 2013, but the 28-year-old says he does not seem himself as an England candidate - despite previously representing his country at every level up to any including the under 21s.

“To be honest I highly doubt that, I’m thoroughly enjoying it here at the minute and enjoying the games and that’s all I focus on,” he said.

“It’s about making sure you keep the performances right. You never know what is around the corner, especially in goal in terms of performances.

“The eyes are firmly on the ball with that one.”

Burnley currently sit 17th in the Premier League table and the goalkeeper is only thinking of trying to help the Clarets to safety, despite the fact his presence in the top flight will inevitably mean his performances are now being watched more closely by those involved in the England coaching setup.

“That’s part and parcel of the Premier League,” he said.

“But the important thing from my point of view is to keep putting in the performances on a consistent basis and I’m certainly enjoying trying to do that at the minute.”

Heaton is one of five players at the club who started their career at one of the two Manchester clubs.

Michael Keane, who recently made his move to Burnley permanent, is a graduate of the United youth system along with David Jones and Heaton. Kieran Trippier and Ben Mee represented City.

“We seem to be gathering a bit of a troupe,” Heaton said.

“I’ve enjoyed playing with Keano since he came into the team.

“I think a centre half playing in the Premier League at 21 or 22, I don’t think there’s too many of those about, so fair play to him.

“The sky’s the limit for him. Obviously his size is important, he’s quick, he’s good on the ball, he’s good in the air, what else do you need?

“He has another side to him as well. He can tackle, he can head it, he can put the blocks in, so if he can mix the two sides to his game and find the balance he can be an outstanding player.

“He has got an awful lot about him and a lot more to come.

“He’s a very good signing for us.”
