POLICE are asking a motorcyclist who may have been in the area at the time of a crash which killed a former international cyclist to come forward.

The incident happened at around 2.20pm on Sunday, September 21 when 42-year-old David Hitchen, was riding his bicycle along Rivington Road, in the direction of Belmont.

Mr Hitchen is believed to have been in collision with an orange and white Yamaha motorcycle.

He was taken to Preston Hospital where he died from his injuries.

Mr Hitchen, from St Helens, was a very talented cyclist, having won several races with both national and international fields.

He also rode for the GB team in the late 90s.

Police are keen to speak with a rider who was on a black motorcycle and was wearing black leathers and is thought to have been in the area at the time of the collision.

Sgt Claire Pearson of the Road Policing Unit said, “I would like to thank those who have already come forward and helped us with our enquiries and I would appeal for the rider on the black motorcycle to come forward as he may be able to assist us.

“We believe he may have been filming his ride with a head cam, and could hold vital information to help us.”
