THE investigation into an Accrington mum who wrongly claimed almost £100,000 in benefits has been featured on national television.

BBC programme Saints and Scroungers detailed the probe into Dawn Wood, who was jailed last year after she admitted lying about living with her partner, Robert Fletcher.

Hyndburn Council’s fraud manager, Neil Osliffe, told the show: “She fraudulently claimed just over £93,000 in state benefits. That’s the highest case I’ve dealt with in my time at Hyndburn Borough Council.”

After an anonymous tip-off the council made initial enquiries before launching an in-depth investigation, the show heard.

Mr Fletcher, who worked for Valley Windows and Conservatories in Nelson, was seen leaving the home in the morning and returning each evening. Bills were all in Mr Fletcher’s name and he also gave the Accrington address as his home to his employers.

Wood, then 35, was jailed for six months and was told to repay the money.

Mr Osliffe added: “The amount of money at the end of the day is irrelevant to us. We have a job to do and we will do it to the best of our ability.”
